In the past decade Spain has exploded on the global wine scene, with a number of previously unknown regions rising to prominence. Today there are 64 denominated wine regions in Spain, the world’s third-largest wine producer, thus the old guard of Rioja, Ribera Del Duero and Sherry have a lot of new company.
In an effort to help American wine lovers better understand this burgeoning wine country, Wines From Spain, a unit of the Spanish Trade Commission, has come out with its first-ever wine guide, a 120-page, soft-cover book entitled “Wines From Spain Far From Ordinary Wine Guide 2005-2006.”
Accurate, loaded with enticing color photos, and best of all free of charge, the book was created by wine authority Doug Frost, a master sommelier and Master of Wine. Frost authored the book’s introductory sections and penned hundreds of peppy tasting notes (each of which includes importer info, facts about aging, and where applicable, a website for the winery). User-friendly as can be, the book also offers a glossary of key Spanish wine terms, guidelines on Spanish wine laws, label info, a listing of grape types, and ultimately seven regionally based sections that provide the details on Spain’s improving white, red, sparkling and dessert wines. There’s even a vintage chart and some timely scoop on Spanish cheeses.
