Tim Mondavi is elbow deep in a new wine project. He’s processing 50 tons of grapes from vineyards near his home in Stag’s Leap District and his late Mother’s home, which now belongs to his sister Marcie.
“It’s been many years since I’ve focused so much on such a small quantity of fruit,” Tim admits, adding that he wanted to continue the legacy of great wine.
The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot bought from Constellation’s Icon Estates, which acquired the vineyards (and Robert Mondavi Winery) last year.
For now, he’s making the wine at two locations, John Caldwell’s winery with its caves, and Agustin Huneeus’ Quintessa, but with his own fermenters. He bought eight oak uprights and two deep cement tanks, which he believes makes a more complex wine than stainless steel. The uprights are half the size of those at Robert Mondavi Winery, however. Tim adds, “It’s an exciting time for us again after the events of last year. We didn’t want that to happen, but we’ve put it behind us.”
Tim also says that he’s delighted that his brother Michael can begin again with his own Folio program. “It’s different from what I’m doing, but that’s not bad. People sometimes automatically think that differences are negatives, but they’re not. We’re just pursuing different parts of the wine business.”
And the name for the wine? Tim doesn’t have one yet. He jokingly said, “Do you have any ideas?”
