On May 22, the promenade at Lincoln Center’s State Theater was once again the site of Wine Enthusiast Magazine‘s premier event, Toast of the Town. Over 1,000 people attended, strolling from station to station to sample great food from some of New York City’s finest restaurants and sips of some of the world’s great wines. Spirits, coffee and Saratoga bottled water were also served, and a lively jazz band played throughout the evening. The crowd was composed primarily of New Yorkers, of course, but an impressive number of people came from as far as New Orleans to attend the event.
Over 60 wineries offered pours and 30 restaurants provided tasting portions of their food. Wine highlights included Sbragia Family Vineyards’ 2002 Rancho del Oso Cabernet Sauvignon; Clarendon Hills’ single-vineyard 2003 Grenache, Merlot and Syrah; Laetitia Winery’s Reserve Pinot Noir; Sauvignon Blanc from
Vergelegen, Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s New World Winery of the Year in 2005; the 2001 Marchesi di Barolo; plus multiple offerings from Champagne Louis Roederer, Piper Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck.
Outstanding foods included Thalia’s spicy salmon tartare with forbidden rice, micro cilantro, ruby red tobiko rae, lotus root chips and ponzu sauce. Luis Caseiro, executive chef at Alfama, presented Polvo Grelhado—grilled octopus served over fingerling potatoes and garnished with shaved bell peppers, tomatoes, red onions, chives and grated eggs in a
cilantro coulis. Toast of the Town, said the chef, is "a great showcase for us."
At the Fresco by Scotto table, owner Anthony Scotto was greeting guests and helping to serve creamy polenta with veal and chicken bolognese and a drizzle of gorgonzola cremaficato. "People love this event," said Scotto as he surveyed the dense but happy crowd. "It makes it nice to be in this business."

On April 27, over 900 people celebrated Wine Enthusiast Magazine‘s Toast of the Town:
