Wine Enthusiast Awarded for Sicilian Wine Coverage

Wine Enthusiast’s Italian Editor, Monica Larner, was among the top winners of the Sicilia Madre Mediterranea international journalism competition for her article “The Wine Roads of Sicily,” published in the July 2006 edition. The annual journalism award competition, held in Palermo, Sicily each December, is among the most important in Italy, aimed at promoting the country’s wine industry.

“[Monica Larner] found an interesting format for portraying Sicily as an exciting destination by clearly outlining the routes wine-and-food lovers can take to visit the island,” said Alfredo Tesio, master of the awards ceremony. “What surprised us was her ability to present succinct and useful information without losing site of Sicily’s historic and cultural big picture.” The competition was sponsored by the Region of Sicily and Touring Club Italiano.

Larner took a second place award with first place going to BBC Radio 4’s Simon Parkes. Other winners included Denmark’s Jørgen Johansen, Paulius Jurkevicius from Lithuania, Germany’s Steffen Maus and Japan’s Tetsuro Akanegakubo. The judging panel included Sicilian historian Gaetano Basile and American Mary Simeti Taylor, author of A Sicilian Journal and Pomp and Sustenance: 25 Centuries of Sicilian Food.

“I am most proud of the Buying Guide section of that issue,” said Larner: “We tasted and scored more than 200 wines that are available to American consumers making it one of the most comprehensive tastings of Sicilian wine ever published in a U.S. magazine.
