Blue skies and warm weather set the scene last night at Lincoln Center’s State Theater for Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Toast of the Town. Over 1,200 people enjoyed fine wines and gourmet food while sipping and strolling to the sounds of live jazz music. The orchestra and promenade were filled with people chatting about their favorite tables to visit; the balcony overlooking New York’s iconic Lincoln Center fountain bustled with attendees enjoying the beautiful evening.
Toast of the Town New York sells out each year, and 2007 was no exception. Nearly 80 wineries poured, giving attendees choices from over 600 wines to sample. Highlights from the night were Mommessin 2004 Clos de Tart, Château Magdelaine 2003, Steininger 2005 Grüner Veltliner Grand Cru, Clarendon Hills 2004 Romas Vineyard Grenache and Rizzi 2001 Barbaresco Riserva.
Accompanying the top-notch quaffs were outstanding foods provided by NYC restaurants. These restaurants, many the recipients of Wine Enthusiast’s Restaurant Awards, were among some of the best in the city. Some crowd favorites were Nonna’s Classic Risotto with asparagus and peas, Abboccato Ristorante’s Halfmoon Red Beet and Gorgonzola Dolce Ravioli tossed with Italian Butter and Poppyseeds.
“I really liked the dish from Compass [Foie Gras Rice Crispy with Granny Smith Apple Compote]. I’m having fun finding the perfect wine pairing,” said Lisa Tanzman of Westchester, New York.
