Shhh. Don’t even think of asking what’s in this bottle.
A new line of vino, called “Wine That Loves,” is positioning itself as the ultimate in idiot-proofing food-and-wine pairings.
That’s because instead of identifying itself by varietal, the wines are cleverly named to trumpet the ideal food pairing for what’s inside: Wine That Loves Grilled Steak (a Chilean red); Wine That Loves Pasta With Tomato Sauce and Wine That Loves Pizza (both Italian reds, natch); and Wine That Loves Salmon (an Italian white—the only white in the current line).
The country of origin appears on the label, as mandated by law, and the back label broadly describes the intensity, acidity, level of tannins and flavors of the blend in the bottle. But that’s all the info you’re getting, folks.
This approach may provoke eye-rolling and hand-wringing from skeptics and wine educators alike. Could this be more than just a gimmick?
It’s possible: those trusting enough to brave a blind tasting are putting themselves in the capable hands of Wine Director Ralph Hersom, former Le Cirque sommelier and Windows on the World cellarmaster.
Immune to our shameless wheedling, Hersom refused to reveal what he terms “the secret sauce recipe” in the bottle.
“Our philosophy is, we’re not tied to any one particular country or grape varietal,” said Hersom in a phone interview from Milan, fresh from sourcing wines in Italy and Spain to pair with Grilled Salmon and Roasted Chicken. “The whole world is our vineyard.”
Starting June 1, wines will be available for purchase from the company’s Web site: www.winethatloves.com. Although retail and distribution plans were still in process at press time, the wine is expected to be for sale as soon as mid-June at outlets including Target and Whole Foods.
Next up: the enigmatic wine will be loving Chinese food, Sushi, Hamburgers and Macaroni & Cheese.
