95 Rochioli 2005 East Block Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley); $90. The ’05 is crisp and full-bodied, with a flood of cherry-pie filling, pomegranate, rhubarb, beefsteak tomato and flashy new oak. It’s young and immature in tannins, and needs cellaring. Best after 2009, it will gain complexity through 2015.
95 Macrostie 2004 Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast); $42. I love this wine. The vineyard is in one of the coolest parts of Carneros, where the maritime influence has given crisp acidity that boosts long hangtime fruit. The cherry, raspberry and cola flavors are gorgeous, while the earthier pomegranates and rhubarb are elevated to pie-filling sweetness. Yet the wine is entirely dry. What a beauty. —S.H.
91 Espelt 2006 Coralí (Emporda); $10. Ethereal smelling, pretty to look at and gracefully balanced: When Spain gets it right with its Garnacha, a case in point being the ’06 Coralí, the pleasure quotient is high. The bouquet here is wet and inviting, the palate lusty and elegant. —M.S.
