Eat Like a President

Inaugural Day restaurant specials, celebrating executives past, present and future.

Barack Obama won’t be the only one eating and drinking in style to celebrate his inauguration as president of the United States. Several chefs are drumming up celebratory, informal dinners for those not invited to the January 20th inauguration-and the political-inspired foodie fever stretches outside of Washington’s restaurant scene.

Over on the West Coast, at Nick’s Cove in Tamales Bay, California, chef Adam Mali will roll out a three-course “Barack Obama Inauguration Dinner,” appropriately priced $20.09. The first dish is a salad of escarole, avocado and persimmon; the second, a braised lamb shoulder with polenta and gremolata, while the dessert is a spiced pear bread pudding. Lee Hillson, Executive Chef at T. Cook’s at the Royal Palms in Phoenix, is serving his “bipartisan tasting menu” during the entire month of January. Dining options are named after presidents Harrison, Kennedy, Lincoln, Jefferson and Madison. At the meal’s conclusion, each guest receives a bag of colorful jelly beans (purportedly Ronald Reagan’s favorite snack).

Of course, chefs in the nation’s capitol are also hosting unofficial inauguration dinners. At Palette inside the Loews Madison Hotel from January 10-25, chef Arnel Esposo has a special lunch and dinner menu that incorporates dishes from every presidential inauguration luncheon since 1957, excluding the inaugural years of Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford (both opted not to have an inauguration dinner). Esposo says the menu will feature cream of tomato soup with crushed popcorn (President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1961), Texas heart of filet mignon with bercy sauce (President Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1965) and apple-cranberry brown Betty (President William Jeffeson Clinton, 1993).
