Thoroughly ensconced in the Vancouver dining scene for almost 25 years, Joe Fortes is named after a legendary local seaman whose gregarious nature embodied the hospitality of the restaurant. Owner Bud Kanke has used his 37 years in the industry to create the quintessential seafood grill with its dramatic horseshoe-shaped bar where over 20,000 oysters are shucked yearly. Each summer, the restaurant celebrates the wild salmon runs and participates in various oyster shucking competitions. In 2008, resident shucker Bob Skinner brought home another first-place trophy from J.P.’s Shellfish World Invitational. Chef Scott Pratico oversees the kitchen, producing menu items like the 3-tier seafood tower, while sommelier Nessa van Bergen continues to oversee the growth of the wine cellar, which is expanding its holdings of British Columbia wines.
