The recent staging of ProWein 2010, International Trade Fair Wines and Spirits, ended with record visitor and exhibitor figures. Over 3,300 exhibitors and 36,000 trade visitors from around the world came to Düsseldorf, Germany. One third were from outside Germany.
Participants emphasized the business-like style and atmosphere of the show. “Prowein is the most important business show in Europe”, said Agustin Pazos, International Business Director of Port and Douro table wine producer Sogevinus. According to Thomas Klinger, at top Austrian producer Weingut Bründlmayer: “ProWein was indeed extremely busy for us—and I suppose for many of the 300 Austrian participants. We had good feelings from this show.”
“And the quality of people was very high, noted Joel Peterson, senior Vice President of Constellation, “we got exactly what we wanted.”
Chile was there in force, despite the devastating earthquake. “Every winery that had committed to the event made it,” said Juan Somavía, Wines of Chile’s managing director. “Our wineries are keen to gain an even greater market share so that we can help rebuild our workers’ homes and schools.”
Apart from the business, ProWein offered visitors a chance to indulge in some food and wine pairing, with the food exhibit “Wine’s Best Friends.” Most popular was the chocolate and wine booth. A quick tasting revealed that white chocolate goes with Arneis from Italy, milk chocolate with German spätlese, dark bitter chocolate with Carmenère from Chile (but not with Cabernet Sauvignon) and orange chocolate with Gewürtztraminer.
