20 years after the original was introduced, Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve, the first single-barrel Bourbon product from the Knob Creek brand, ships later this month and will be available for sale in February.
Compared to the standard 100-proof Knob Creek Bourbon, the single-barrel version is higher proof, clocking in at a hefty 120 proof or 60% alcohol by volume. Like the standard Knob Creek, the Single Barrel Reserve is aged for nine years (apparently, it takes a minimum of six years to coax vanilla notes out of the oak barrels) and is not chill-filtered.
With a suggested retail price of $40, about $10 more than the regular Knob Creek, it’s an attractive and competitive offering from the single-barrel category.
So how does it taste? It has vanilla and orange-peel scents and a very deep, rich burnt-toffee taste with a lingering vanilla finish. However, due to its single barrel origin, flavors may vary slightly among bottlings. As would be expected from an over-proof product, it has a big alcohol bite, so this may not be the ideal Bourbon to consume undiluted. On the other hand, it could be just the ticket for those who like their Manhattans or Old-Fashioneds with extra oomph.
