Stellenbosch property Mulderbosch announced Adam Mason as new winemaker and Chrianto Oosthuizen as new general manager, effective December 1. Charles Banks, founder and managing partner of California investment group, Terroir Capital, purchased the property last year.
In 2008, Mason first crossed paths with Banks, working together at Screaming Eagle with winemaker Andy Erickson during harvest. Based on their “mutual appreciation of wine, teamwork and continuity that was borne out in the cellar,” says Banks, he decided then that Mason was his first choice for the Mulderbosch position.
Mason recalls that during his time at Screaming Eagle, he was “very impressed by [Banks’] ethos and approach to making wine and the positive chemistry that developed between us as a team. I relish the opportunity to resume our relationship at Mulderbosch.”
As previous winemaker at Klein Constantia, Mason gained extensive experience with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay—both varieties of the Mulderbosch portfolio are well regarded in the United States. He’s now looking forward to adding Chenin Blanc to this list.
“I love to drink Chenin,” Mason says, adding, “any South African winemaker worth their salt should have experience with this historically significant local variety.”
Oosthuizen, who joins Mulderbosch after nearly 20 years with Neil Ellis Wines, has extensive experience in finance, marketing, personnel and production management.
“These two South African industry leaders are proof of the company’s commitment to taking Mulderbosch to the next level,” says Banks.
