It’s clear Grammy Award-winning producer Timbaland knows what it takes to make a hit record, having worked with a dizzying long list of chart-topping talent, from Missy Elliot and Justin Timberlake to Jay-Z and Beck. But can the 40-year-old translate that success to the spirit world? The hip-hop star has little doubt, and is entering the marketplace with his LeSutra Sparkling Liqueur, a ready-to-drink vodka-and-white-wine spritzer.
WINE ENTHUSIAST: Are you a cocktail or wine connoisseur?
TIMBALAND: I’ve always been a fine wine and spirits lover, but I’m more of the occasional drinker. I like a nice glass of Opus One or Silver Oak with dinner every now and then.
W.E.: How did you get involved with LeSutra?
T: My wife and I sat down with Tom Bruno, one of the co-founders of Grey Goose, Ryan Rosenberg of Ginger Wine & Spirits and marketing experts Adam Berkowitz and Jonathan Webb about coming up with a unique, ultrapremium spirit. I realized that there’s a void in the premium spirits arena for women. LeSutra is a sparkling liqueur infused with premium vodka and is the first of its kind to have four different flavors [blueberry, peach, grape and strawberry]. There’s no mixing necessary. W.E.: You mentioned that grape and strawberry are your favorites. Did you develop the flavors?
T: I’ve been involved in the whole process. The concept, the name, the flavors—it was a team process. I’ve learned so much and can’t wait for everyone to enjoy the fruits of our labor.
