How To: Make Simple Syrup

This crazy-easy recipe produces a batch of must-have neutral sweetener.

It’s funny how many at-home mixologists never make their own simple syrup and instead reach for honey or agave. While these golden nectars certainly have their place, they can significantly affect the taste and color of the cocktail. The translucent simple syrup is pure sweetener and a must have for modern drink making (and it’s crazy easy to make, thus the name). You’ve put this off long enough. Time to batch some up.

One:

In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup regular granulated sugar and 1 cup water. This step is by far the most difficult part of the recipe. Did we mention this was a simple syrup?


Two:

Set on high heat, and stir until the sugar is dissolved. When the liquid reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. After, let it cool to room temperature.


 

Three:

Next, pour the sweet stuff into a container, cover and refrigerate. Your tasty syrup batch should keep for about a month, assuming you don’t drink it down that first night.


Three flavored syrups to try:

Mix these ingredients in a cheesecloth, tie with twine and steep the packet during the simmering phase.

Spice: Whole cloves, allspice berries and/or cinnamon sticks. Best for whiskey Christmas punches.

Herb: Sprigs of rosemary, mint or thyme. A dash or three of this is absolutely lovely in gin and vodka mixers.

Citrus: Strips of lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit peel.  Substitute this for triple sec in Tequila drinks.
