The winning wines from the famed 1976 Judgment of Paris—Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’s 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon—were recognized in Smithsonian Magazine’s November 2013 issue as part of “101 Objects that Made America.” The list, culled from 137 million artifacts and works of art in the institution’s collection, includes such items as Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit, Abraham Lincoln’s top hat, Charles Lindberg’s Spirit of St. Louis, and Lewis and Clark’s compass.
Sixty California wineries will be at the Wine Institute’s California Pavilion at the inaugural ProWine China 2013 Trade Fair, running from November 13-15, 2013. The wineries will represent 110 brands and 32 American Viticultural Areas, with regional associations representing Napa Valley, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara wine regions also present.
The Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance Foundation is launching its inaugural online auction this Thursday, November 7 running through Sunday, November 17. The event features 26 lots, including a weekend getaway at Justin Vineyards and a case of Isoceles, a collection of magnums from L’Aventure Winery and a helicopter tour of Paso Robles wine country with a private tour of Hearst Castle. All proceeds will support five local charities: The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County; The Boys & Girls Club North San Luis Obispo County; Transitional Food & Shelter, Inc.; RISE (formerly known as North County Women’s Shelter & Resource Center/Sexual Assault Recovery & Prevention Center of SLO County); and One Cool Earth.
Argentine wine brand Graffigna has launched its new Centenario Elevation Red Blend in the U.S. market. The blend features Malbec, Bonarda, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat, all grown at high altitudes. The Centenario Elevation is $14 for 750 ml.
Trinchero Family Estates announced a collaboration with the Robertson family of Duck Dynasty fame to produce Duck Commander Wines. Duck Dynasty, which premiered on A&E in 2012, follows the Robertson family as they run Duck Commander, a producer of professional duck calls founded in 1972 and now a multimillion dollar business. The first vintage will include Triple Threat 2011 Red Blend, Wood Duck 2012 Chardonnay and Miss Priss 2012 Pink Moscato, all produced from California vineyards.
