“One of the wines that I consider a gem or discovery on the list is the Castello dei Rampolla 2003 Vigna d’Alceo,” says Turzyn. “This wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot blend. It’s a big wine, rich and very complex. I only have a few left of this cult wine, which shows notes of dark fruit like blackberry and plum, along with cedar and sandalwood.”
The Wine Program
Areas of strength on the extensive list include Italy, Bordeaux, Burgundy and the U.S. There are 22 wines by the glass and 750 labels, with bottle prices ranging from $40–3,000. “This year, we’re celebrating our 30th anniversary and are showcasing some older American wines from the past 30 years,” says Heidi Turzyn, wine director. “I’ve selected vintages that are special to Gotham and are showing well.”
“I find a dish that many wine lovers enjoy, including myself, is the goat cheese tortellini with braised lamb shank, butternut squash, parsnip and Parmigiano-Reggiano,” says Turzyn. “I enjoy this dish with a Meursault that has subtle oak and great acidity, preferably a 2009 vintage.”
The fee is $55 per bottle with a maximum of two bottles, and can’t be on the list.
