Don Stott Collection Fetches $5.2 Million For Sotheby’s

Sotheby’s held an auction for the third installment of The Don Stott Cellar on May 20, establishing a new benchmark for the highest prices per bottle for Domaines Rosseau, Roumier and Raveneau. The final total was $5,175,816, Sotheby’s said, topping projected pre-sale estimates around $2.8 million.

Don Stott’s collection featured some of the finest Côte d’Or producers from among the most sought-after vintages of the last 100 years, along with other vinous treasures from around the world.

“Basquiat set multiple records in the art world last week and Rousseau, Roumier and Raveneau did the same in the wine world, reaching prices that shocked the wine collecting community,” Jamie Ritchie, worldwide head of Sotheby’s Wine, said. The $5.2 million sale of the third part of this collection brings Sotheby’s total Stott Cellar sales to $19 million, making it the third-largest Sotheby’s has ever sold worldwide.

Stott’s passion for wine collecting began in the early 1960s with the first of many trips to France where he became enamored with Burgundy. Red Burgundy represented two-thirds of the lots that were offered, with white Burgundy making up another 20 percent.

Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate to Open Napa Valley Winery

Vintner Alejandro P. Bulgheroni announced the opening of Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate, in Saint Helena. The winery produces small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the estate and from select sites within Napa Valley.

The Estate team is led by wine industry veteran Santiago Cilley, managing director of Bulgheroni’s North American-based wine companies.  Winemaker Philippe Melka, consulting enologist Michel Rolland and viticulturist Jim Barbour oversee winemaking and vineyard management operations.

The 2014 vintage marks the inaugural release of Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate wines.  Included in the portfolio is the iconic Alejandro Bulgheroni Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend representing the finest barrels of the Estate, personally chosen by Bulgheroni and the winemaking team. The company also announced Lithology by Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate, a series of single-vineyard and appellation-designated wines made from select Napa Valley sites.
