Bid Against Hunger Raises Thousands for Needy

Gala New York auction and dinner features top chefs, restaurants.



Hundreds of New York City's top restaurateurs and food-loving philanthropists gathered in the Metropolitan Pavilion last Tuesday, October 21st for an evening of food, drinks, and a grand auction. The event benefitted City Harvest, a rescue organization dedicated to feeding the city's hungry residents. Volunteers of City Harvest are known for the recognizable truck they drive throughout the city, gathering excess food and delivering it for free.

Attendees sampled bites from over 75 leading restaurants and food purveyors including NOBU, Le Circ, and Picholine. Celebrity chefs Tom Colicchio and Eric Ripert were among many restaurateurs present for the charitable evening, which was also attended by  celebrities such as Star Jones. Aldo Sohm, Wine Director of Le Bernardin, poured Clos Vougeot among other top bottlings in the VIP Room, for which attendees paid an additional fee. Truffle grits from D'Artagnan were also a highlight. The theme of the night seemed to be comfortable yet decadent foods. Dishes like wagyu beef sliders, pulled pork sandwiches, and potato/goat cheese pierogies were emblematic rather than dainty hors d'oeuvres. In these times, comfort is much needed, especially when people are considering their wallets.

The live auction featured lots valued anywhere from $400 to the high thousands, with items such as a night-on-the-town with Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin and Tom Colicchio of Gramercy Tavern and Craft, who promised to show the winners their favorite "in-the-know" chef spots. Wine Enthusiast sponsored a lot for an Australian wine tasting in the winner's home, which went for over $800.
