A Day in Hunter Valley

Make the most of your one day trip with these suggestions.

You're in Sydney on business and you have just one day off to tour the Hunter. What should do you do with your precious day in wine country? Some locals have their own ideas.

Michael Hope, owner/winemaker of Hope Estate suggests visiting boutique wineries' tasting rooms. His favorites include Briar Ridge , Allandale  and Oakvale ; the latter has a nice café called Gold Rock Café. Then hit Tower Estate  and Tempus Two , which is part of McGuigan-Simeon.

Geoff Krieger, general manager, Brokenwood Wines: "I like Esca at Bimbadgen for lunch, or a casual shared plate at Café Beltree.  Then again, you can drive a  SUV for 30 minutes to the top of the Brokenback range, stand on the edge of the escarpment, open a bottle of sensational Brokenwood 2005 Semillon (easy—it's screwcap) and throw down a plate of freshly shucked oysters, look out at the Hunter Valley in its entirety and out to sea and not see another soul. Treasured tranquillity!"

Iain Riggs, winemaker, Brokenwood Wines: "Golf at the Greg Norman-designed 'The Vintage' golf course, a tour and taste at Brokenwood and then dinner at Robert's Restaurant, one of the Hunter's top restaurants."
