Uncorkings: Edmond de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia Partner to Produce a Rioja

The Edmond de Rothschild branch of the Bordeaux-based Rothschild family is expected to launch Macán, a Rioja co-produced with Vega Sicilia, an estate in Ribera del Duero, Spain. Slated to be released this winter, the Macán 2009, created from 100% Tempranillo, will retail between $26–$40/750 ml.

To toast a successful 2012, Pernod Ricard USA and Perrier-Jouët Champagne accepted the invitation from the New York Stock Exchange to ring the Stock Exchange’s closing bell on New Year’s Eve.

The Mendocino, California-based Fetzer brand has released two blends named Crimson and Quartz, its first new U.S. wine range in nearly 30 years. Crimson is comprised of Syrah, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, and Quartz is a combination of Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürtztraminer and Pinot Grigio. Both wines began shipping in October and retail for $10/750 ml.

A recently published study conducted by researchers at University of Navarra’s Department of Preventative Medicine and Public Health, which was published in BMC Public Health, found that Spanish women who consumed wine or other alcoholic drinks in moderation experience depression in smaller numbers than women who abstain from drinking alcohol. Moderate alcohol intake, approximately 1–2 beverages per day, was associated with a 38% lower chance of depression. The positive results of the study were only recorded for women participants, and the type of alcohol consumed reportedly didn’t make a difference.

The Court of Master Sommelier’s announced that master sommeliers Laura Maniec, Andrew McNamara, Keith Goldston and Brett Zimmerman will join the court’s board of directors in January 2013. Maniec is the owner of New York City’s Corkbuzz Wine Studio; McNamara is the director of fine wine at Premier Beverage Company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Goldston is a restaurant consultant and wine educator in Los Angeles; and Zimmerman is the owner of Boulder Wine Merchant in Boulder, Colorado.
