Bemelmans Vesper Martini

For decades, the story of an impish little girl, Madeline, and her exploits at New York’s luxury hotel, The Carlyle, captured the world’s imagination.

Commissioned by The Carlyle to paint large-scale murals throughout the hotel’s bar area, artist Ludwig Bemelmans subsequently created the Madeline series while living at the famous hotel with his wife and Madeline-aged daughter. The famous watering hole now bears Bemelmans’ name and his whimsical Central Park-themed murals remain a mainstay at Bemelmans Bar.

With the acknowledgment that the fictional Madeline will remain forever too young to sip much more than a Shirley Temple or a Roy Rogers, Bemelmans Bar mixologist Brian Van Flander turned to another fictional female, Vesper from the James Bond thriller Casino Royale, for cocktail inspiration. The recipe for the Vesper Martini, below, was created directly from the pages of the Ian Fleming title.
