Trincheros Donate Thousands of Acres to Napa County

Donation will preserve a sizable stretch of the eastern valley.

Bob Trinchero, owner of Trinchero Family Estates and Sutter Home Winery, will be inducted this year into the Vintners Hall of Fame—an annual celebration of accomplishments in the wine world past and present, most specifically for his role in developing white Zinfandel.

Now the Hall of Fame will also have to make mention of he and wife Evalyn’s stunning donation of park land to Napa County—the fertile surroundings of which have played such a huge role in the Trinchero’s ongoing success.

The couple will donate 3,400 acres of land on the eastern front of the Napa Valley near Lake Berryessa to the Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District to preserve a sizeable stretch that includes what’s known as Spanish Valley and three miles along Putah Creek. Another 240 acres has been donated to the Lake Berryessa Resort Improvement District. They’ve also previously devoted time and given money to the local Boys and Girls Club, as well as to local schools and hospitals.

The couple took over Sutter Home—at the time, a winery of little note—in the 1960s and slowly turned things around by first making Zinfandel from Amador County. Wanting a wine of greater intensity, he drained some of the free-run juice before fermentation, leaving some of its natural sugars, calling it “Oeil de Perdrix, A White Zinfandel Wine.”

The rest, well, is history. White zinfandel became the introduction to those who might not have otherwise taken any interest in wine. This year alone, 4 million cases of their white Zinfandel will be released.
