Uncorkings: U.S. Tops World in Consumption of Wines over $10.

A comprehensive global study by International Wine and Spirit Research (IWSR), commissioned by VinExpo reports that the United States is the largest consuming country of wines that retail for more than $10 per bottle. We’re also the number one country in wine consumption by volume and value. Other highlights from the report include:
•    U.S. consumption of sparkling wines is growing twice as fast as that of still wines
•    The U.S. is the largest market in the world for Tequila
•    Worldwide, wine consumption is expected to grow by up to 5.3% annually by 2013
•    Red wine accounted for 54.7% of still wines consumed in 2011
•    France is the world’s leading exporter of wine (by value)
•    International spirits revenues were up 43% from 2007–2011

Louis Latour’s Henry Fessy—the négociant’s Beaujolais business—is launching two new wines this spring: Château des Labourons (Fleurie) and Château des Reyssiers (Régnié).

The Napa Valley Vintners organization has created a seven-part video series entitled, Napa Valley Rocks. It aims to educate viewers on the geologic, climatologic and viticultural factors that make the region unique.

Craft + Estate, the national import arm of The Vintner Group, has announced an agreement to represent O. Fournier, which produces wines in Argentina, Chile and Spain.

According to ShipCompliant, the state of Maryland’s report on its first year of direct shipping is highly positive. Permit fees and sales and use taxes accounted for nearly $700,000 in revenue for the state while wholesalers actually sold 3.61% more wine. Availability of hard-to-find wines improved and the state reported no incidents of underage purchasing.

In its annual briefing on the state of the wine industry, Silicon Valley Bank, a major wine lender, projects wine sales growth of 4–8% in 2013.

Buffalo Trace’s latest experimental Bourbons to be released are the Hot Box Toasted Barrel and the #7 Heavy Char Barrel. Packaged in 375-ml bottles, each will retail for approximately $46.

Long Island’s Wölffer Estate Vineyard will continue under family ownership. Joey and Marc Wölffer have bought out their other siblings following the passing of their father and winery founder, Christian Wölffer. The sister-and-brother team will mark the 25th anniversary of the estate this year.
