Former Wine Institute CEO John DeLuca to head up Gallo board

America's biggest wine company welcomes DeLuca

It has been announced that DeLuca, who headed the Wine Institute for 28 years, will serve as "senior advisor to the board of directors" of America's biggest wine company.

In an exclusive interview, his first since the new appointment was made public, DeLuca says he will advise Gallo on how to be competitive on a worldwide basis "without being caught in partisan politics."

The former deputy mayor of San Francisco adds, "There's no Republican or Democratic way to drink wine." DeLuca characterizes his new appointment as "a beautiful convergence of city and state affairs and governance all coming together." Recently, DeLuca has been a Senior Advisor to the President of the University of California and a member of the Advisory Board for the Shorenstein Center at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

John DeLuca was the 2004 winner of Wine Enthusiast's Lifetime Achievement award.

He had been planning on writing his memoirs when the call came from Gallo, and says he's still planning on finishing his book. "But I don't want to just look back in nostalgia," DeLuca says. "Like Robert Frost wrote, there are miles to go before we sleep."
