Celebrating 25 years of Wine Enthusiast Magazine in Belle Époque Style

More than 700 wine lovers gathered at Manhattan’s Hudson Hotel in honor of the magazine’s silver anniversary and its spectacular June issue.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine celebrated its 25th year anniversary and spectacular June 2013 anniversary issue in style—Belle Époque-themed style, to be exact.

On Thursday, May 9, more than 700 wine lovers turned out to sample an all-star array of wines and spirits—all scored 90 points or higher by the WE tasting team—at its Red and White Bash held at Manhattan’s Hudson Hotel. In addition to the revelry, 100 percent of net ticketing proceeds benefited Wine to Water, a non-profit organization that focuses on providing clean water to those in need around the world.

In an immersive two-floor set designed by renowned events artist Adam Aleksander, revelers were treated to 1920s-style jazz-age music courtesy of the 12-piece jazz band Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra. Overhead, an aerialist perched in an illuminated crescent moon, dropping wine “love notes” by parachute.

While many revelers arrived dressed to impress—in red and white attire, of course—others took inspiration from a fascinator station, where they had their makeup done to match the theme, and elaborate head hairpieces applied right on the spot. There was also a sketch artist, who roamed about, roving photographers with Polaroid cameras in tow, and a most popular “boudoir photo booth.”

Spectacular wines from 33 international producers were on offer, including Brut Premier Champagne from Louis Roderer, 2008 Generations Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa’s Raymond Vineyards, 2004 Argentino Malbec from Bodega Catena Zapata, and 2010 Folatieres Premier Cru Chardonnay from Joseph Drouhin of Puligny-Montrachet.

Selected covers of the last 25 years of Wine Enthusiast Magazine lined the stairwell of the venue, and many of those selected for the June issue’s touted top "40 Under 40 Tastemakers" article were in attendance.

Toward the midpoint of the evening, Wine Enthusiast Publisher and Editor Adam Strum took to the stage, thanking Wine Enthusiast readers for making the past 25 years worth celebrating.

“I want to give a huge thank you to our wine partners here this evening that have supported us along the way. They are pouring some of their finest bottles for you tonight, so be sure to appreciate the hard work and excellence that goes into every glass,” said Strum, adding “I want to give a toast to you all—cheers to our partners, to our readers and cheers to the next 25 years of Wine Enthusiast Magazine!”

Guests raised their glass, shouting even more raucously as a barrage of glittery confetti rained down, and the band played on into the night.
