On March 26th, wine and food lovers lined up behind multiple doors eager to get into Wine Enthusiast's sold-out Toast of the Town event in San Francisco. The consumer wine and food tasting was held for the third time in the city's venerable War Memorial Opera House, home to the San Francisco Ballet and Opera.
From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. more than 1,000 discerning urban wine tasters wound their way up and down five floors of the Beaux-Arts building, enjoying classic wines—everything from light sparkling Prosecco to Heintz Vineyards Sonoma Coast Syrah—and fine spirits, making new discoveries and mingling with producers like Gina Gallo, who was pouring at Gallo Family's table, and the kind folks from Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon, among many others. Overall, more than 500 wines—from 75 wineries located all over the globe—were poured. Many of Northern California's finest restaurants, from Slanted Door to Postrio to Campton Place, tended tables of food spread strategically among the winery booths and the San Francisco Food Bank benefited from a silent auction also held at the event. Live jazz music on various floors added to the upscale ambiance.
"We had a nice, steady stream of guests," said Mia Malm of Icon Estates, who was pouring Jackson-Triggs 2007 Proprietors Reserve Vidal Icewine from the Niagara Peninsula. "A lot of people were genuinely interested in learning about what an Icewine is and how it is made. People were in a good mood overall."Â
Toast of the Town originated in New York, where it has been held at the Lincoln Center annually. It will take place again there this year on June 15th, after traveling to Atlanta (April 16th) and Chicago (April 30th ). In each city, the event is held in a setting of historic and/or cultural significance.
