Jon Moramarco Takes Presidential Reins at Winebow

The industry veteran will bring decades of experience to Wine Enthusiast’s 2009 Wine Importer of the Year.

Some people join the wine industry late in life, deciding to pursue their passion after becoming disenchanted with current career trajectories. Not so for Jon Moramarco. A 12th generation winemaker (his family made wine in Italy for centuries before his grandfather emigrated to California and purchased a vineyard during Prohibition), Jon grew up pulling vine weeds and later, at Callaway winery, cleaning tanks. After graduating from the school of viticulture at the University of California at Davis, he moved into the business side of things. Today, he can boast over 20 years experience holding senior level positions at a wide range of companies including Allied Domecq Wines USA, Canandaigua Wine Company, Icon Estates, Constellation Europe and Constellation International and BW 166 LLC, an advisory service focused on the wine and beverage sector. As of March 30, the industry longtimer can add another impressive position to his resume: President of Winebow, Wine Enthusiast’s 2009 Wine Star Importer of the Year.

“I have long admired Winebow for its unique business model, its impressive portfolio of wines and spirits, and its dedication to customer service,” says Moramarco. “I am very excited to join this dynamic organization.”

Headquartered in Montavel, New Jersey Winebow, is renowned as a leading importer of fine Italian wine (under the Leonardo LoCascio Selections label) but also brings in and distributes wine from Spain, Argentina (including, as of 2009, the Bodega Catena Zapata brand), Chile, Germany, Austria, New Zealand and Portugal along with saké from Japan, cachaça from Brazil and whisky from Islay, Scotland. It’s headed up by Leonardo LoCascio, another Italian wine industry veteran (this one, though, started out in corporate finance).

Says LoCascio: “I am very excited to have Jon on board as I believe it is the final lynchpin in creating a world class senior management team that will successfully lead this company into the future.”
