Cinema-Inspired Cocktails

Bartenders from Brisbane to New York City have dreamt up delicious cocktail recipes that make watching the Academy Awards at home enchanting.



What better way to celebrate this year’s glamorous Academy Awards then with some spectacular libations. Mix a cocktail inspired by this year’s Best Picture nominees or celebrate some cinematic moments from decades past by imbibing a beverage named after an old favorite flick. Bartenders from Brisbane to New York City have dreamt up delicious recipes that make watching the Academy Awards at home even more enchanting than sitting in the stadium with the stars—hopefully.


 

The Big Lebowski

2 ounces Three Olives Triple Shot Espresso Vodka
2 ounces Three Olives Chocolate Vodka
4 ounces chilled milk

Pour all ingredients into a shaker and mix well. Strain into a martini class.

 


The King’s Cocktail, inspired by “The King’s Speech”

1 part Courvoisier VSOP
1 part fresh tangerine juice
¾ part almond syrup
Dash of fresh lemon juice
Sparkling wine to top

Combine Courvoisier VSOP, tangerine juice, almond syrup and lemon juice. Shake well and pour over ice into a Collins glass. Top with sparkling wine and garnish with a tangerine twist. You can also pour without ice into a champagne flute.


The Swan Song, inspired by “Black Swan”

2 parts Courvoisier VSOP
¾ part fresh lemon juice
1part  Lemongrass thyme syrup *

Combine all ingredients, shake and serve strained in a martini glass. Garnish with a flamed lemon twist.
To make the lemongrass-thyme syrup, combine 2 quarts sugar, 2 quarts water, 7 pieces lemongrass and 3-5 sticks of fresh thyme in a pot.  Bring to boil, then let sit for 5 hours before straining.


Blood & Sand, inspired by a 1922 film by the same name

1 ounce Dewar’s White Label Scotch
1 ounce fresh-squeezed orange juice
¾ ounce Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth
¾ ounce Cherry Heering

Place all ingredients into a mixing glass 3/4 full of cracked ice. Shake and strain well into a martini glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry placed onto the rim of the glass.


Cobb’s Cognac Dream, Inspired by “Inception”

1 part Courvoisier VSOP
1 part Rum
2 parts    rosé wine
Exotic fruits of your choice, like raspberries and blackberries

Combine all ingredients, stir and serve in a wine glass over ice. Garnish with exotic fruits.


Prickly Pear Smash, Inspired by “Inception”

2 ounces Maker’s Mark bourbon
¼ ounce Anjou pear, thinly sliced
¼ ounce lemon, thinly sliced
½ ounce fresh lemon juice
1½ ounces prickly pear
2 dashes Regan’s orange bitters

Muddle/shake/double-strain over crushed ice in a rocks glass.  Garnish with prickly pear and lemon slices.


Clockwork Orange

1 ounce 42 Below Feijoa Vodka
½ ounce Mandarine Napoléon liqueur
½ ounce Massenez Crème de Peche
1 ounce Pineapple juice
1 ounce Cranberry juice
½ ounce Citrus glaze (Orange-juice reduction with sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and star anise)

Shake hard and double-strain into martini glass.
