Bidding is Live for South Africa’s Inaugural Cape Wine Auction

Online bidding is live for the inaugural AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction, a two-day event that will benefit education groups in South Africa’s winelands. Held on March 14 and 15, the auction consists of two major events, a barrel tasting and auction preview at the Waterford Estate in Stellenbosch and a grand lunch auction at Delaire Graff Estate, which will be live-streamed online. Online bidding is available though the events; check out the catalog here. Funds raised from the 39 lots will benefit the Pebbles Project, the MAD Charity and the Click Foundation.

Global Wine Partners, financial advisory service provider and dedicated wine investment bank, announced that Ray Chadwick has joined the firm as a principal. Chadwick has over 30 years of wine industry experience in executive positions, formerly serving as President and CEO of Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines from 2001-2009, and Corporate Executive Vice President, Wine, at Young's Market Company in 2010. Named Wine Enthusiast’s Man of the Year in 2008, Chadwick also currently serves as a Director at Wine Institute.

On Thursday, February 20, Gianni Zonin, President of Casa Vinicola Zonin and recipient of Wine Enthusiast’s Lifetime Achievement award, received the Leonardo Award in Rome. An annual prize for entrepreneurs who have significantly contributed to Italy’s global image, previous winners include fashion designer Giorgio Armani and architect Renzo Piano.

Premiere Napa Valley, Napa’s influential barrel auction raises $5.9 million, doubling the previous record. Russ Weis, the chair of the Napa Valley Vintners Board of Directors and general manager of Silverado Vineyards, said, “It shows there is a renewed confidence in the fine wine market in general and in Napa Valley wines specifically.” Read the whole story >>>

Last week, Hollywood film director and native Canadian James Cameron purchased British Columbia’s Beaufort Vineyard and Estate Winery for an undisclosed sum. Susan and Jeff Vandermolen, who founded the estate in 2006, will continue acting as winemakers and consultants for at least a year.
