Toast of the Town Chicago 2009
Over 1,300 devotees gather for fine wining, dining and culture inside the stately Field Museum.
On Thursday April 30, over 1,300 wine lovers gathered at the Field Museum of Natural History overlooking Lake Michigan for Wine Enthusiast's 4th annual Toast of the Town culinary gala in Chicago. Strolling around the museum's striking Stanley Field Hall, guests from as far away as Texas, Wyoming and Indiana sipped and tasted gourmet offerings from Chicago and beyond during this evening of gustatory exploration and celebration.
Eclectic, elegant offerings were on hand in the museum's white marble hall, including Jackson-Triggs 2007 Proprieter's Reserve Vidal Icewine (Niagara Peninsula), Domaine Wachau 2007 Achleiten Gruner Veltliner Smaragd (Wachau), Sequoia Grove 2005 Cabernet (Napa Valley) and Perry Moore Cabernets from Dr. Crane and Beckstoffer's Tokalon vineyards, as well as innovative cuisine from topnotch Windy City restaurants. Highlights included Aria restaurant's Spiced Lamb Tenderloin with Potato and Sweet Pea Aloo; Red Lentil Rasam with Peekytow Crab from Aja Steak; Earl Grey-seared Arctic Char from the Signature Room at the 95th; Grilled Black Angus Skirt Steak with Meyer Lemon Dressing, Arugula, Crimini Mushrooms and Chili Threads from Trattoria No. 10; Big Eye Tuna with Grapefruit from Boka; Courtright's Salmon Rillette on Crispy Wonton; and the Firecracker (spicy Tuna and tempura crunch that's topped with wasabi mayo and chives) and Hotate Volcano (smoked salmon with spicy scallop, unagi sauce and chives) from Ai/Tsuki. Live jazz added to the festive gathering, which is held each year under the watchful eye of the museum's perennially popular Sue, the world's largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil.
Chicago is the third of Wine Enthusiast's 2009 Toast of the Town series, following San Francisco (March 30) and Atlanta (April 16). The 2009 finale will take place in New York City on June 15 inside the majestic Lincoln Center building.
