Bourbon Storm and Ginger Dragon
Why two cocktails this month? Because Wine Enthusiast feels that if you're going to seek out and buy an ingredient you wouldn't normally have on hand, you might as well get lots of mileage out of it.
Elderflower syrup is a natural sweetener that has both a honeylike quality plus a little tartness, explains Rain Lampariello, mixologist at New York's Chinatown Brasserie. For both of these original cocktails, Lampariello uses elderflower syrup infused with fresh ginger (he simply adds Â¼ cup freshly grated ginger to the 10-ounce bottle of syrup—keep it in the fridge if you're not using it all right away). His favored brand is Bottle Green; it can be purchased at gourmet shops like Whole Foods, or online at www.kalustyans.com.
2Â½ ounces Bourbon
1 ounce ginger-elderflower syrup
Half a lime, muddled
2 ounces club soda
In a mixing glass, muddle the lime and ginger-elderflower syrup. Add ice, Bourbon and shake. Pour entire contents into highball glass and top with club soda.
3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
2Â½ ounces Hangar One Citron vodka
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
Â½ ounce simple syrup
Â½ ounce ginger-elderflower syrup
1 ounce club soda
Lemon wheel, for garnish
In a mixing glass with ice, pour in all ingre-dients except soda. Shake and pour contents into tall glass, and top with club soda. Garnish with lemon wheel.
