Sonoma Valley Harvest Auction Raises $744,000 for Charities

Charities get lucky at Vino Las Vegas.

The Sonoma Valley Harvest Wine Auction, held September 1-3 in Sonoma, California, saw it's largest single bid in the event's 14 year history—$100,000. The auction that prides itself as an exuberant antithesis to the more staid Napa Valley Wine Auction attracted bidders from around the nation.

The top bid was made by the Benziger winemaking family for three one-of-a-kind 3-liter bottles of 2005 Merlot from Sangiacomo Vineyards. The wine was crafted by Ravenwood's Joel Peterson in honor of Bob Sangiacomo, the SV family patriarch who died last spring. "Bob would be honored to have the Benziger Family remember him this way," said his nephew, Steve

As is tradition, the auction was held at the Sonoma Mission Inn, and featured skits and musical numbers based on this year's theme: Vino Las Vegas. Alongside serious wine collecting and bidding on travel around the globe, winemakers like the Benziger sons and Alis Arrowood paraded around in Elvis and sleazy showgirl costumes.

The live auction's total take, $744,000, benefits local charities.
