Buffalo Trace Distillery is Declared a National Historic Landmark

The United States Department of the Interior named Kentucky’s Buffalo Trace Distillery a National Historic Landmark. It joins the ranks of landmarks like the White House, the Empire State Building and the Alamo. There has been a working distillery on the Buffalo Trace site since 1787. There are only 2,577 buildings with this designation.

Last Tuesday, July 23, a summer hailstorm destroyed up to 70 percent of Burgundy’s harvest. According to the Agence France-Presse, some estates in Beaune lost up to 90 percent of their crops, while heavy hail, strong winds and downpours hit Meursault, Volnay, Pommard and Savigny-les-Beaune.

Columnist and LGBT activist Dan Savage has launched a campaign to boycott Russian vodka in light of recent political uproar in that country for its adaptation of severely anti-gay laws and subsequent violence. Savage, who founded the It Gets Better Better campaign, calls for gay and ally bars to stop selling Russian-owned vodka brands like Stolichnaya to send a commercial message to producers. In response, Stolichnaya CEO Val Mendeleev wrote a letter citing all the ways parent company SPI has worked with the LGBT community.

Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family winery, is the 2013 recipient of The Botanical Research Institute of Texas’s (BRIT) International Award Of Excellence in Sustainable Winegrowing competition. International wineries submitted applications documenting their sustainable programs to BRIT, which judges applicants on three tenants of sustainability: environmental, social and economic aspects.

Sideways, the 2004 film that affected Merlot sales for years, has taken to the stage. At the helm of the stage adaption is Rex Pickett, author of the original novel, and Des McAnuff, artistic director of San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse. Sideways will run until August 25, 2013.
