Toasting the Good Life

Wine is the essential element for any great party.

It’s no epiphany that where there are close friends, great food, an amazing setting and interesting conversation, wine is also sure to be found.

As Wine Enthusiast Companies celebrates 35 years in the wine accessories business, we toast the great evolution wine has undergone, and the community it builds.
Whether it’s a grand, formal party or just a weeknight get-together with friends, wine is a unifier that’s meant to be shared. This power to spark and deepen bonds—with friends, family, colleagues and even strangers—is just as magical as what’s in the bottle.

There’s no better place to further your love of wine than in a social setting where discovery and discussion can flourish.

Here at Wine Enthusiast, we’re avid entertainers. Some of us throw pool parties, others host rooftop cocktail gatherings, and some get really rugged and do wine tastings while camping in the woods. We run the gamut on size, formality and occasion, but one thing’s for sure…where you find us, the wine is going to be good.

This month’s home entertaining package is an amalgam of our knowledge, and while we naturally put wine at center stage, we’re serious about good food, ambiance and theme, too. In our pages, Lifestyle and Entertaining Editors Jeff Jenssen and Mike DeSimone—not surprisingly incredible party hosts—give you the low-down on how to throw varying types and sizes of wine-driven parties, and what tools you’ll need to pull it off well. This is an essential read for anyone who is serious about parties where vino is the focus.

What to pour? Consider the elegant and sometimes-overlooked white wines of Bordeaux, the subject of European Editor Roger Voss’s article, or for something more exotic, check out Executive Editor Susan Kostrzewa’s focus on Greece’s four top varieties of Assyrtiko, Moschofilero, Agiorgitiko and Xinomavro.

Also in this issue: Spirits Editor Kara Newman’s piece on equal parts cocktails reveals that great libations needn’t be a burden in a busy party environment. Meanwhile, Tasting Director and Senior Editor Lauren Buzzeo profiles the South African visionaries producing world-class wines in the emerging region of Swartland.
