Cocktails for Awareness

Bars and restaurants across the country offer pink drinks to honor National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

If you’re seeing a lot of pink drinks on cocktail menus, there’s a definite reason for that.

Many bars and restaurants across the country have developed signature pink drinks to honor National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Proceeds from sales of these beverages fund organizations that educate about breast cancer and support research that fights for a cure.

For instance, Shula’s 347 Grill  in Atlanta (located in the lobby of the Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel features a “Pinktini” cocktail in October, and a buck off every purchase goes towards a local non-profit (The Sport of Giving) that supports breast-cancer outreach.

In New York City several venues are supporting the cause. Aquavit Restaurant’s $14 Aquapolitan directs some of the proceeds to cancer research.

Many California places have hooked onto the cause, including Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern in San Diego, a harborfront gastropub. Fifty percent of the cost for each “Ta-Ta-Tini” funnels to the Breast Cancer Unit at Moorese UCSD Cancer Center.

Up the coast, Portland and Seattle restaurants are in on it too. Hotel Fifty in Portland created “Pom Pilot,” a $9 drink where 25 percent of the profits go to Oregon and Southwest Washington chapters of Susan G. Koman for the Cure. Copperleaf Restaurant, inside Seattle’s Cedarbrook Lodge, developed “Susan’s Lemon Drop.” Twenty-five percent of profits from this $12 drink are sent to the Puget Sound chapter of Susan G. Koman for the Cure.

If you’ve got a Village Tavern near you – its ten locations include Scottsdale, Ariz.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; and Broomfield, Colo.—order a “Hope-Tini” during October and $2 helps to support breast-cancer research. (There is even a non-alcoholic version of the drink available.)

In Chicago, there are plenty of bars to throw your support at, such as Lockwood Restaurant and Potter’s Lounge inside the Art-Deco themed Palmer House Hilton. Order a “Bubble Gum Martini” for $12 and half of that goes to the Lynn Sage Foundation, a not-for-profit cancer-research organization. The Portage Restaurant and Bar, also in Chicago, debuts “The Pink Ribbon” ($7.50) this month, with some proceeds from that drink benefiting Susan G. Koman for the Cure.

Down in Miami, the “Pinkie Promise” cocktail dreamt up by bartenders at Fontainebleau’s bars and lounges help fund the work that Susan G. Koman for the Cure is doing. A buck from each cocktail sold is donated.
