Jan Shrem, winemaker of Clos Pegase Winery in Calistoga, California, donated $10 million to The University of California, Davis, to help defray the costs of building a new art museum on campus. Construction of the 40,000-square-foot building is slated to be finished in 2015.

On Friday, December 16, the New Jersey state Senate voted 23-13 to approve bill S-3172, allowing small in-state and out-of-state wineries to ship wine directly to consumers and New Jersey retailers, rather than selling to a wholesaler first.

Tenimenti Angelini, a Tuscan wine firm, has acquired 70% of the Veneto-based winery Cantine Bertani for an undisclosed amount. Founded in 1857, Bertani continues to be a leader in Valpolicella production.

The Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) reported that a total of 192 million bottles (16 million cases) of Champagne were shipped globally for the year to date through September. With the holiday season and fourth quarter yet to conclude, total shipments are on track to meet 2007’s record of 339 million bottles. Fourth quarter shipments typically account for a third to a half of annual Champagne sales.
