Unique Greek Wines

Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Executive Editor Susan Kostrzewa selects five Greek wines reflective of the past-meets-present combination that makes these wines so appealing.

The Greeks have millennia of winemaking history under their belts, but never has there been a better time to experience the diversity and high quality of wines from that country. Modernized techniques and a global view have resulted in selections with international appeal, but vintners are still dedicated to preserving terroir and indigenous varieties. These unique whites reflect the past-meets-present combination that gives Greek wines such appeal.

92 Domaine Sigalas 2010 Assyrtico (Santorini); $24. The 2010 balances rounded citrus, crisp sea salt and sparkling minerality. Delicious with grilled fish, fruit or alone on a hot day, this is an elegant gem of a white and one of the best Greek wines offered today. Imported by Diamond Importers Inc.

90 Domaine Costa Lazaridi 2010 Amethystos (Drama); $20. This assertive blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Assyrtico and Sémillon offers an appealing nose of melon, lemon and peach, with a rounded blend of melon and citrus flavors. Fresh acidity and spice give it lift, making this a delicious go-to wine for warm weather. Imported by Nestor Imports.

89 Tetramythos 2009 Roditis (Patras); $13. This wine—made from an ancient indigenous variety—is a real find, with its crisp green apple, floral and citrus aromas and blend of curvy tropical fruit and crisp acidity on the palate. Lush but refreshing, it’s both balanced and complex. Imported by Trireme Imports.

88 Boutari 2010 Assyrtico (Santorini); $20. This modern white starts with aromas of peach, lemon zest and tropical fruit, with a rich and full fruit palate. Crisp acidity finishes the wine cleanly. A versatile wine with wide appeal. Imported by Terlato Wines International.

88 Lyrarakis 2010 Vilana (Crete); $13. A nose of lemon, slate and rich, ripe fruit leads into balanced, full bodied flavors of citrus and tropical fruit. Fresh acidity balances out the curvier side of the wine. Easygoing and a good everyday sip. Imported by Stellar Importing Company, Inc.
