Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Italian Editor Monica Larner was named Best International Journalist by the prestigious Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia, an association of 130 top Italian wine producers. The awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, March 27 in Verona during the four-day Vinitaly wine expo.

The award is the fourth earned by Wine Enthusiast Magazine and Larner’s third—a record number achieved by any single individual. Larner was named Best Young International Journalist in 2008 and 2010. In 2010, Publisher and Editor Adam Strum accepted the Best International Wine Publication award on behalf of Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

“It’s a great honor to be able to tell the story of Italy through the narrative of the grape,” says Larner. “It’s an even bigger honor to have those efforts recognized so generously by the Italian wine community.”

Other winners included Italian wine writer Ian D’Agata, who was named Best Italian Journalist. Matt Skinner of Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph and Gourmet Wine Traveller took home the award for the Young International Journalist category. Decanter won the award for Best International Publication. Winners of the Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia received a silver grape leaf made by the Florence-based silverware company, Braganti Argenterie.

The award for Larner is especially fitting as her April cover story on Sicilian wines was widely distributed during Vinitaly. Wine Enthusiast Magazine also recently unveiled a new Mandarin digital edition of the magazine to be distributed in Mainland China and Hong Kong.

Later this year, Larner will help edit a special 200-page issue of the Wine Enthusiast Magazine dedicated to Italy’s wines, foods and touring opportunities. The special addition will be distributed to magazine subscribers and will be sold in fine wine and bookstores.

Comitato Grandi Cru Chairmen Vittorio Frescobaldi and Paolo Panerai hosted the ceremony in the Palazzo della Ragione in Verona’s Cortile Mercato Vecchio. Some 350 producers, journalists and members of the wine trade attended.
