Uncorkings 8.6.12: Washington State’s Charles Smith Plans an All-Chardonnay Project

Washington State’s Charles Smith—owner of K Vintners, Charles & Charles and Charles Smith Wines: The Modernist Project—is planning a yet-to-be-named all-Chardonnay venture using the former Whitman Cellars winery in Walla Walla that he purchased earlier this year. Smith has hired Brennan Leighton, former winemaker of Efeste, to oversee the new project’s wine production.

The trade group Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP) has announced its board of directors for 2012–2013. Robert Biale of Robert Biale Vineyards in Napa, California, who was appointed president of ZAP for 2011–2012, will serve a second term.

Napa, California’s Delicato Family Vineyards (DFV) has announced a five-year plan to expand its original Manteca, California, winery, increasing production to 16 million cases per year from 12 million cases. The expansion will include the installation of new state-of-the-art equipment.

Scientists from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, have enlisted the public’s help in naming two new wine grape varieties to be released from Cornell’s grape breeding program in 2013. The two varieties—a cold-resilient white grape and an organic red grape—are currently named NY76.0844.24 and NY95.0301.01, respectively. The winning monikers will be announced at the Rochester, New York, Viticulture 2013 conference in February. To read more about this these grapes, click here.

Escondido, California’s Stone Brewing Co. is releasing a new brew in commemoration of its 16th anniversary. The 16th Anniversary Ale is a double IPA based on rye malts, brewed with lemon verbena and various hops. The ale is slated to be released on August 13 in 22-ounce bottles and on draught.
