At the 2013 La Part des Anges charity gala, held at Castle Brillac in Charente, Rémy Martin House of Cognac auctioned a Jeroboam of its Louis XIII Cognac for $43,241. The Cognac is a blend of 1,200 eaux-de-vie, each aged from 40 to 100 years old, bottled in a crystal decanter created by nine crystal craftsman at the Cristallerie de Sèvres. The proceeds of the sale, alongside 27 other auction lots, benefit the French Red Cross and the Ark of Charente, a local, social housing charity.

Stefano Campatelli tendered his resignation as director of The Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino Wine to pursue other professional challenges after 23 years in that position. As of press time, the Consortium has started a search for Campatelli’s successor.

Champagne was flowing last week in Connecticut, but it was nothing to toast about. On Wednesday, September 19, a tractor trailer transporting hundreds of cases of Veuve Cliquot Champagne crashed into a state Department of Transportation vehicle, causing the tractor-trailer to roll onto its side and spill its cargo. The crash closed Interstate 395 for two hours as emergency personnel and state agencies assessed the crash and cleaned up damage. Both drivers were admitted to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Wines of South Africa named Siobhan Thompson as its new CEO, effective November. Thompson, former head of global marketing for liqueur brand Amarula, will replace Su Birch, who has been CEO of the industry association since 2000. Birch will remain at WOSA through the end of the year to help with the transition.

Islay’s Bowmore distillery has launched a new single malt Scotch matured exclusively in first-fill Sherry casks. Six thousand bottles of the Devil’s Casks—named after an Islay legend where the Devil is said to have escaped the local congregation in a Bowmore cask bound for the mainland—will be released in October, timed for Halloween and will cost $81.
