Q&A with Jeff Bareilles, Wine and Beverage Director of Manresa

The wine director at one of Wine Enthusiast's America's 100 Best Wine Restaurants gives us his picks for best new wine trends.

Wine Enthusiast: What is the best wine trend of 2013?
Jeff Bareilles: Less of a trend and more of an awareness, are “natural wines,” and the debate as to what makes a wine “natural.” People are talking about it and have opinions, good, bad, indifferent. It's like a political debate. It just goes to show you the power of wine.

WE: How have you seen diners’ wine tastes change in your eight years at Manresa?
JB: I’ve seen a subtle shift toward interest in wines with lower alcohol levels, and a genuine desire to seek out wines that are hand-crafted, rather than mass produced.

WE: You’re known for your innovative list and understanding of unique wines. What’s one of your favorites on the list now?
JB: Pascal Janvier’s Cuvée de Rosier from the Coteaux du Loir, made from Pineau d’Aunis.

WE: What’s one of your favorite pairings to suggest to open-minded diners?
JB: 2011 Calera Pinot Noir from the Central Coast with Monterey Bay squid in black molé. This wine is a blend of elegant fruit from vineyard sites composed of lime, clay, and loam soils. When combined with the sweetness of the squid, harmony exists between the tartness of the wine and the rich, briny features of the molé.
