The Institute of Masters of Wine Welcomes Eight New Members

The Institute of Masters of Wine inducted eight new Masters of Wine into its membership. Two of the MWs are from the U.S. while six are from the United Kingdom. The new MWs are Amy Christine, James Davis, Barry Dick, Matthew Hemming, Anne McHale, Jon Pepper, Demetri Walters and Dilek Caner, originally from Istanbul and the Institute’s first Turkish MW. The total number of MWs is now 312 in 24 countries.

Over the weekend, on September 7–8, the Hudson Valley Wine and Food Festival attracted 18,000 attendees to Rhinebeck, New York. New York Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy was in attendance, singing the praises of upstate New York’s agricultural offerings. Read the full story >>>

California-based Cupcake Vineyards was recently named America’s number one premium wine for the first time, according to Nielsen data. The yearly survey measures sales in volume before naming a brand. According to Nielsen, Cupcake saw a 16.9 percent growth in year-over-year sales, which increased sales volume to 1,789,187 cases, with the number two and three spots selling 100,000 and nearly 500,000 cases less, respectively.

Trinchero Family Estates announced its launch of Sugar Island Spiced and Coconut rums. Sugar Island is the first new in-house product innovation line in the company’s growing spirits division, Trinchero National Spirits, which launched in September 2012. Sugar Island rums are made with Caribbean sugar cane and available nationwide in spiced and coconut flavors for $19.

Ray Chadwick, one of the leading executives in the wine industry over the past twenty years, has formed Chadwick Wine Consulting to offer wineries, executives and investors services ranging from the purchase and/or sale of a winery or vineyard to strategic planning for bringing products to market. Chadwick, who has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines and Corporate Executive Vice President, Wine, at Young's Market Company, among others, and was Wine Enthusiast’s Man of the Year in 2008.
