On Saturday, August 24, Wine Enthusiast Magazine presented Harvest East End 2013, a charity fundraiser that also commemorated 40 years of winemaking in New York’s Long Island wine region.

The annual event, held this year at the McCall Vineyard and Ranch on the North Fork of Long Island, benefitted four regional charities: East End Hospice, Group for the East End, the Peconic Land Trust and the Long Island Farm Bureau Promotion and Education Foundation. The event showcased 43 Long Island wineries and a sampling of their current releases, barrel samples and rare library wines. Wines were accompanied by samplings from 35 local restaurants, farmers, fishermen, cheesemakers and other food artisans. Highlights included rare older wines such McCall Vineyard’s first vintage 2007 Merlot in magnum and Sparkling Pointe’s 2003 Brut Séduction. Beyond wine, the event highlighted unique new offerings from the region like Wölffer Estate’s hard apple cider and Channing Daughter’s VerVino, Sauvignon Blanc-based Vermouth.

Attendees also walked away with the magazines August and September issues.

Adam Strum, Chairman of Wine Enthusiast Companies, spoke at the event, lauding Long Island’s incredible wine-and-food culture and describing the region’s popularity, surprisingly, among Chinese consumers encountered on Wine Enthusiast’s recent three-city tour of mainland China.

Amongst the 1,300 guests in attendance was New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is a big advocate for the state’s wine regions. The governor lauded the efforts of pioneering Long Island winemakers, and highlighted the wine industry’s contribution to the state’s agricultural and tourism industries.
