A Vibrant Affair: The Second Annual Red and White Bash

1 of 12

Wine Enthusiast Magazine's Red and White Bash returned to New York City on May 1, marking its second year with top-rated pours, dance-worthy tunes and a splash of color.

More than 600 wine lovers attended the event at Chelsea’s High Line Stages, enjoying wines rated 90 points or higher by WE’s expert tasters. While the night was a festive affair, it was all for a good cause: net ticketing proceeds benefitted Wine to Water, a non-profit organization that provides clean water in impoverished countries around the world.

The airy, colorful two-floor set-up was the brainchild of event designer Adam Aleksander. From the bright café lights to palms tastefully set throughout the space, revelers were transported to 1940s Cuba. Many attendees came dressed in the night’s signature colors, sipping eclectic wines from iconic and emerging regions worldwide and dancing to traditional Latin bugalú, courtesy of New York band Spanglish Fly.

In an upstairs lounge, restaurants Marsielle, Yerba Buena, Los Americanos, and Hecho en Dumbo dished out Latin-inspired bites like crispy pork belly confit with kale and pickled shallots, seafood tamales made with squid ink and prawns, and crab ceviche with a spicy clam sauce. Some revelers took advantage of hair and makeup stations to channel Old Hollywood, while others vamped in the large-scale photo booth. Those seeking an alternative to wine crowded around the Bacardi Cocktail bar, which offered sips like classic daiquiris and the Old Cuban, a modern take on the mojito featuring Bacardi 8 Años rum and Champagne.

The evening was made complete by spectacular wines poured by more than 50 international producers, including Zuccardi Wine’s 2009 Aluvional Malbec (Tupangato), Trump Winery’s 2007 Brut SP Reserve (Monticello), and Bellavista’s 2007 Pas Operé (Franciacorta). Unibroue and Michter’s Distillery were also on hand, with their own impressive pours.

With New York City’s Red and White Bash under its belt, WE now has its sights set on Chicago’s own equally-colorful soiree, scheduled for June 19
