Jean-Charles Boisset and Gina Gallo Honored for Global Entrepreneurship

Plus a new tool to combat wine counterfeiting is released, and other news and notes from the world of wine, spirits and beer.

Jean-Charles Boisset, proprietor of Boisset Family Estates, and his wife, Gina Gallo, winemaker for Gallo Signature Series Wines, were awarded the Chuck Smith Award for Global Entrepreneurship by the John F. Kennedy’s University’s Institute of Entrepreneurial Leadership (IEL) at the Third Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Ceremony held on May 16, 2014. Boisset and Gallo are recognized as two leaders in wine entrepreneurship, and for their global approach and energy in growing their family business.

CapSeal—a new tool for combating wine counterfeiting and fraud—is now available to producers, and is being demonstrated at Vinexpo Hong Kong from May 27th–29th. Companies INSIDE Secure and Selinko collaborated on the product, which consists of a security chip that is inserted on the neck of the bottle and an accompanying mobile app. The chip and app confirm that the capsule on the bottle has not been tampered with and the cork has not been removed. The CapSeal patent-pending system is compliant with existing capsule bottles, so producers can use the system without replacing their standard corks and capsules.

On Thursday, May 22, Jackson Family Wines announced its management team for the newly created Gran Moraine Winery (formerly Solena Estate Winery) in Yamhill, Oregon. The California-based company, which purchased the property last May, named Oregon vintner Eugenia Keegan to oversee the 220-acre hillside vineyard and winery, while Ken Kupperman will be director of vineyards.

A team of scientists from the Research Institute for Food Science in Madrid, Spain, and the University of Zürich found that red wine, along with grape seed extract, was effective at slowing the growth of bacteria and fighting dental cavities and tooth loss. The researchers hope their study contributes to the development of products that ward off dental diseases.
