Wine App Raises $3 Million in Funding

Delectable, an iOS app that lets users scan wine labels and find wine recommendations from professional sommeliers, announced a $3 million-Series A investment round led by Deep Fork Capital, DN Capital, and Ceyuan Ventures. Delectable—which also counts pioneering wine and social media expert Gary Vaynerchuk as an investor—will use its new funding to grow its engineering team and technology. The company says it currently has two million wines in its database.
Wines of South Africa has appointed Michael Jordaan, former chief executive of the country’s First National Bank, as its new chairman. Jordaan succeeds Johann Krige, chief executive of the Kanonkop winery. Jordaan was awarded Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI) champion status for rehabilitating he and his wife Rose’s 40 hectare Bartinney wine estate outside Stellenbosch.
James Gosper, general manager market development for Wine Australia, announced his resignation, effective May 31. A winemaker by training, Gosper worked for Chandon Australia in the Yarra Valley and in U.S. marketing for the winery’s parent company, LVMH. Wine Australia also announced its new Wine Australia Initiative USA Program alongside BeverageTradeNetwork.com. The program will highlight 17 Australian wineries ready for export, providing marketing and logistics support to account holders in the U.S. market.
At the 48th Concours des Vins de la St Marc competition, a panel of producers and industry experts awarded top red and white wines from the recent 2013 vintage as well as “old wines” from 2010. Domaine de la Janasse took the prizes for producing the top 2010 white and red Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Domaine de Marcoux won the award for top 2013 white, and the prize for 2013 red went to Domaine Pierre Usséglio et Fils. The competition is organized by the Fédération de Syndicats de Producteurs de Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The next Vinexpo international wine exhibition will be held in Bordeaux, France from June 14–18, 2015. This will be the 18th Vinexpo, with new developments to be announced in the coming months.
Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 honoroee and Master Sommelier Ian Cauble recently launched SommSelect, a new membership Web site that features limited production wines picked by Cauble. Currently in beta, the site offers daily deals and tasting notes on selections.
