South African winery toasts their Wine Enthusiast Magazine's Wine Star Award.

Media, wine trade, restaurateurs and friends gathered in the lush gardens of this historic Cape farm to share the happy occasion with the Vergelegen team. On arrival, guests were poured the rich, single vineyard Schaapenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2005. A selection of the current range, as well as a preview of the top label 2004 reds was also available for tasting before the assembly moved across to the lunch tables laid out underneath 150 year old Camphor trees.
In his welcoming speech, Michael Spicer, Chairman of AmFarms, the division of Anglo-American that owns Vergelegen, lauded the award as being great for brand South Africa. "It comes at the same time as a South African film, Tsotsi has picked up an Oscar; such individual accolades can only help to gain recognition for our country as a whole in the United States," Spicer enthused.
Managing Director, Don Tooth, echoed Spicer's words, as he recalled how, in his acceptance speech in New York, he said that Vergelegen received the Award not as an individual winery but as "proudly South African. To see Vergelegen flagship red blend served alongside Château Pichon Lalande and Grange made me feel very proud of our country and wine industry."
Speeches over, winemaker André van Rensburg (dressed in harvest gear!) led a vertical of his flagship Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc blend before the guests enjoyed a long afternoon over a three-course lunch accompanied by some of The New World Winery of the Year's best wines.
