Beer Beauty

Published on Dec 27, 2009

Vinotherapy—the use of complexion-enhancing grape skins in spa treatments—is a known practice among wine lovers and beauty fanatics. But the new trend in  booze bathing is all about beer. Now,suds lovers can lap up brew while they do laps in a pool of Pilsner. Beer-oriented spa baths are springing up in brewery-rich European countries like the Czech Republic,Austria and perhaps soon in the U.S. The idea is that beer is a therapeutic brew of B vitamins (from the yeast), protein and saccharides (in the malt) and antioxidants (from the  hops). Thus a warm soak in suds can revitalize tired skin, and its Jacuzzi-like carbonation relaxes sore muscles.

That’s the theory that Chodovar Brewery in the Czech Republic espouses, adding a proprietary mix of its beer, yeast and herbs to the mineral water in its stainless steel spa whirlpool tubs. Guests can frolic in an open wooden cask of beer at the Moorhof  in Austria; the resort hotel’s bierbadwockenendeis a weekend spa package includes a beer and food pairing dinner as well as a relaxing dip in the bierbad tub.The more athletically inclined imbiber can paddle about in one of seven beer-filled pools at Starkenburg Castle Brewery also in Austria, four people can party in the foamy baths–and enjoy a local lager, too.

Bierbad may translate to the U.S.soon.The Springs Resort and Spa  in Pagosa Springs,Colorado,is considering teaming up with Pagosa Brewing Co.to offer an American version.
