Wine always seems to taste better when it costs far less than you expect for the quality, just as a bottle never tastes as good as it does while you're on vacation in your favorite wine-producing zone. To get back to the bottle-in-paradise nirvana, though, you need some traveling cash. These value-priced bottles will get you to Napa, Oz, Cape Town or beyond—both by saving you the money you'll need for your expedition, and giving you a taste of what's waiting for you when you finally touch down.
This year's edition of our editors' favorite values is sorted by variety, not by region, as it has been in the past. (The wines are still reviewed, of course, by their regional specialists.) The rules governing the editors' value picks, however, haven't changed: 12 wines for $120, with no single wine retailing for over $15. These wines have a quality-to-price ratio that would typically qualify them as Best Buys in our Buying Guide; as always, we've had to relax our requirements for certain bottlings (sparkling wines, Pinots and such) that can be more expensive.
