Avril Maxwell of New Zealand was recently named the 2009 Stella Artois World Draught Master.
On October 29, Maxwell and 28 bartenders from 32 countries competed for the title in New York City at the Public Library. The contestants performed the 9-Step Belgian Pouring Ritual under the watchful eyes of eight judges (including this Wine Enthusiast Online contributor) and a roomful of spectators from around the word.
Avril, 29, has been a bartender and hostess at the Belgian Beer Café Torenhof in Christchurch for the last two years. She performed the pouring ritual perfectly at the competition and won over the judges and the crowd with her answers to questions during the Passion Test. She'll now travel the world as a Stella Artois Ambassador, visiting restaurants and bars where Stella is sold.
